Concept design
Concept design is the origin of all products.
This stage in the development process is sometimes
underestimated, and yet it is probably the most important one
for the customer to get a product that ‘makes sense’. It is
also the reason that hundreds of products have failed, simply
because the concept design was not right.
In the world of cycling, concept design provides great value
to the products as it can improve the products which are in
the market already, create new ones or even devise a roadmap
for future creations. One of the most important qualities of
concept design is that it opens up new paths, it creates new
categories and/or disciplines, and it is the start line for
good, bad or crazy ideas. Some have become market leaders or
given names to disciplines which are common today, but only
started with a few sketches, the wish to create something the
designer considered necessary, fundamental. It might have been
an idea that stood out from the rest and ended up becoming a
product category. We could name dozens.
Concept design is the start, where ideas are kept, improved,
dismissed or simply explode like a firework festival, even
creating new industry sectors, companies, and all thanks to
the development of an idea. Concept design is one of the most
important in creating and developing a product. This is the
fundamental stage where things are set in motion. In
subsequent stages, the project will be refined and this is
where the rest of the departments intervene.
Concept designers don’t often get much recognition by the
public, many times they are not known because they create
concepts and not realities, but anyone who is a bit sound will
realise many products we use today come from an idea from
years ago, developed and matured into a fabulous product.
Concept designers have the capacity to think ahead, look out
for concepts that would go unnoticed to most people, they are
ahead of time. They create interesting concepts because they
are not limited and conditioned, their mind does not have
closed doors, and in their department they don’t have to stop
the ideas from flowing and develop naturally, as it should be.
An interesting exercise for all those who like design,
regardless of which field, is to look through all the
processes which intervene in the creation of a product, from
concept design to final product, through prototypes,
modifications, product image creation stages, manufacturing…
it is an impressive process which starts with the idea.
Sometimes if we look at the initial concept and we compare it
with the product in our hands, we will be positively
surprised. Other times the concept is destroyed along the way
because of the urge of many companies to base their strategy
in creating a highly commercial product, regardless of other
premises.
To be relevant and successful with the design and creation of
new concepts it is fundamental to have experience in the
sector. It is not the same to have deep knowledge of the
sector and all its fields, than being new to it. Experience
and qualification offer a broader perspective, and knowledge
and information are a great advantage worth considering.
Nowadays, thanks to new technologies and the great network,
there is more information and it is more available, but
classifying and processing such a huge amount takes a precious
time. The experience acquired during years of processing
information is very valuable to crate concepts and succeed
with a design which leads to a useful and top-quality product.
