Product development

The development of an idea, project or in this case, product, is one of the most important stages in its creation. After all the investigation phase and all the brainstorming, the concept design is done and now we face the reality. Vague ideas are not valid any more. Once the decision is made and the primary parameters of the product are specified, it is time for the development stage, in which the ideas must be clear and have a good perception of quality and lead time.

If you take a decision lightly in this phase it may have expensive consequences, perhaps ruin the product or even the company. We have seen some pretty crazy examples. If, on the contrary, you think about it, and meditate over and over it, the development phase can become eternal and one might never see the end of it.

You must bear in mind that when the product in development is very important in its range, or even clash with that of its competition, you have to be careful to not be dragged into confrontations or over accelerating the lead time. We know that many times the early bird gets the worm, but it isn’t always like that. Follow your development process and keep your competitors in sight but do not obsess with them because that could be detrimental. Remember that if at the end your product is not as good as your competitors’, you will be able to study it in detail and see how you can improve future versions. Many brands make the majority of mistakes at this stage because of the rush, generated by excessive concerns about the product of their competitors.

The development stage requires great concentration. If you have the capacity to do it all in-house then you have a certain advantage. If on the contrary you have to outsource parts of the process you must have everything very clear, well planned and controlled. Managing external resources well is crucial. The more people or external companies that play a role in the process of developing a product, the more chances for mistakes (though if everything is well controlled and managed, there is no reason why it should happen). Of course, it will oblige you to be extra concentrated and have fluent communication with the people in charge of every process. Otherwise, at the time of putting everything in place, surprises may arise.

This step of the whole process is of great importance, which is why we recommend including all departments in it. Obviously some will have more responsibility than others but they are all important to achieve a successful result. After all, the best way to work for a development team is just like that, as a team. Success or failure depends on all of them.
